New Maxus T90EV is first electric pick-up truck on sale in the UK
The race to electrification has largely passed the pick-up truck market by so far, but that is changing with the arrival of the Maxus T90EV, the first electric pick-up truck to be launched for the UK market.
The T90EV is based on the Chinese-market T90 double cab pick-up. This model is powered by conventional combustion engines, while the truck’s design follows familiar cues from the wider pick-up sector, with a massive grille and plenty of rugged detailing to emphasise its work roots.
For the electric version the T90EV removes all of the standard truck’s running gear and replaces it with an 89kWh battery that’s located under the chassis. Power comes from a rear-mounted 201bhp electric motor, meaning the T90EV is rear-wheel drive. The low-slung battery under the chassis means ground clearance will be limited, so off-road driving – and wading especially – might be a challenge.

Maxus has offered limited information regarding battery range, with the only figure quoted being a WLTP city figure of 198 miles. Based on the figures for other electric models, that means a combined range of around 130 miles could be feasible.
The double cab model is a fairly standard pick-up truck shape, measuring 5,365mm x 1,900mm x 1,809mm, while the cargo bed measures 1,485mm x 1,510mm x 530mm. Maxus has quoted a payload of 740kg, but that means the T90EV can carry less than the one-tonne required by UK legislation for it to qualify as a commercial vehicle.
Standard kit includes a 10.25-inch digital touchscreen, reversing camera, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels and a bed-mounted roll bar. Prices for the T90EV will be revealed closer to the model’s launch, with order books due to open in August. First deliveries should commence in the first quarter of 2023.
