Sleek new Peugeot 4008 coupe-SUV spotted
The forthcoming Peugeot 4008 crossover has been caught testing ahead of its expected official unveiling later this year. Despite the heavy camouflage, it’s clear to see the sleek coupe SUV packs some typically stylish Peugeot design traits.
Representing the French firm’s debut into the increasingly popular coupe SUV market, the 4008 will rival the likes of the Toyota C-HR, Renault Arkana and Volkswagen T-Roc, as well plug the gap between the 308 hatchback and 3008 SUV in the brand’s range.
At the front, Peugeot’s ‘sabre-tooth’ daytime running lights are clear to see, while the headlamp design takes its cues from the new 308 hatchback. Look past the car’s camouflage and you can see a lower roofline than the more traditional 3008 SUV, plus a sloping rear that gives it a sportier profile. The triple ‘claw’ rear lights seen on the rest of the brand’s line up will almost certainly make an appearance on the 4008.
Stellantis’s modular EMP2 platform will underpin the 4008 so we could see a choice of a 128bhp 1.2-litre petrol, 222bhp plug-in hybrid or even a 128bhp 1.5-litre diesel. It’s likely these powertrains will only be available with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Given the Peugeot 308 will soon be offered with an all-electric e-308 variant, there could also be an e-4008 in the pipeline. In the 154bhp e-308 a 54kWh battery provides 250 miles of range – although the e-4008’s extra size and weight will likely mean it won’t be able to travel quite as far. Even so, it should still provide healthy competition to entry-level versions of the Skoda Enyaq Coupe and Volkswagen ID.5.
We’re yet to see inside the new 4008, but it’ll no doubt take its inspiration from the 308 hatch. That means a 10-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dash with ‘piano key’ buttons beneath it and the latest i-Connect infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
There’s no word on pricing yet but given it’ll be pitched as a more fashionable and sportier cousin to the 3008, a starting price of around £30,000 seems likely.
