Aston Martin and Britishvolt team up for next-gen battery tech

Aston Martin has announced a tie-up with British battery manufacturer Britishvolt to develop “bespoke high-performance battery cell technology” for its future luxury performance electric cars.

Aston plans to launch its first BEV in 2025, and the deal with Britishvolt will see the two firms target “new standards of repeatable on-track performance, charging and range”. The joint research and development team will also work on a new battery management system.

The venture is another confirmed step in Aston Martin’s electrification roadmap. The luxury British brand has already confirmed a hybrid version of its DBX SUV for the Chinese market and confirmed it will deliver its first plug-in hybrid model – the Valhalla supercar – to customers in early 2024.

By 2026 Aston states that all-new models in the line-up will offer an electrified option, which will likely extend to its traditional GT and sports car models to replace the DB11 and Vantage. The brand is targeting a fully electric line-up by 2030.

It’s no secret that Aston’s financial health has been under the microscope recently, but the brand says its new battery research and development programme will “be funded by existing capital expenditure commitments to developing electric vehicles.”
